On June 13, 2024, a joint DME MAC article was published, advising the DMEPOS supplier community of recent revisions to the Manual Wheelchair Bases policy article.
Effective July 1, 2024, the following statement was REMOVED:
“When the home assessment is based upon indirectly obtained information, the supplier must, at the time of delivery, verify that the item delivered meets the requirements specified in criterion C."
The REVISED article will read:
"Issues such as the physical layout of the home, surfaces to be traversed, and obstacles must be addressed by and documented in the home assessment.” to “Regardless of the method used for the home assessment, issues such as the physical layout of the home, surfaces to be traversed, and obstacles to the use of the selected manual wheelchair must be addressed by and documented in the home assessment.”
This revision to the policy article is another positive step in an effort to ease the administrative burden DMEPOS suppliers face, and will better facilitate the discharge process to ensure documentation requirements are met.
This change is effective for claims with dates of service July 1, 2024 and forward.
